HBO Greenlights Game of Thrones Prequel Series, House of the Dragon
Earlier today, word broke that HBO cancelled its first attempt to create a Game of Thrones prequel spinoff despite filming the pilot episode over the summer. However, the network isn’t leaving Westeros behind anytime soon. Via The Hollywood Reporter, HBO has given a rare straight-to-series order for House of the Dragon, a new GoT prequel set 300 years before the original series.
George R.R. Martin and Ryan Condal co-created House of the Dragon; which will focus on House Targaryen. Condal, a veteran of USA’s sci-fi series Colony, will write the ten episode first season. THR also notes that this is not the same prequel that Martin co-created with Bryan Cogman. Instead, this is based on Martin’s book, Fire & Blood; which chronicled the rise and the downfall of the Targaryens. Miguel Sapochnik will direct the pilot and additional episodes of the series. Sapochnik and Condal will also be the co-showrunners of the prequel.

Casey Bloys, HBO’s programming president, shared his enthusiasm for the project in a brief statement.
“The Game of Thrones universe is so rich with stories,” said Bloys. “We look forward to exploring the origins of House Targaryen and the earlier days of Westeros along with Miguel, Ryan and George.”
