Countdown for moon mission Chandrayaan-2 begins

India's second moon mission Chandrayaan-2 seeking to explore the unchartered lunar South Pole by landing a rover will be launched Monday.

The Moon mission, which has been rescheduled for Monday after scientists corrected the glitch in the rocket, will be launched at 2.43 p.m. from the second launch-pad at Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh.

A 20-hour countdown for the launch began at 6.43 pm on Sunday. This will be the second attempt to launch the mission after an earlier lift-off scheduled on July 15 was called off due to a technical glitch in the rocket's cryogenic stage.

According to Indian Space Research Organisation, everything has been checked and the launch preparations are going according to plan.

During the countdown, propellant filling operations will be carried out in the 44 metre tall three-stage vehicle. The launch process is expected to last about 16 minutes after lift-off, after which Chandrayaan-2 will be injected into an earth parking orbit.

The Chandrayaan-2 mission will help ISRO gain a better understanding of the origin and evolution of the Moon.
